While it does contain a few of Melee's most infamous features, the game is making an effort to have its own identity as well. The game isn't a total carbon copy of Melee with simpler mechanics though.
Lots of characters play quite similarly to some characters in Melee as well. You can practically skid across the ground! The aerial attacks in the game also have a minimal amount of lag upon landing, eliminating the need for L-Cancelling. Wavedashing in Melee is something many players may find challenging, but in Rivals of Aether you can do it with the press of a button. The game also simplifies some mechanics exclusive to Melee and makes them a vital part of the game, such as wavedashing. The goal is to rack up your opponent's damage and knock them off of the platform and send them off screen, and each character features different types of moves like normals, smashes, aerials and specials. The mechanics are very similar to Super Smash Bros.
The game aims to explore concepts that were featured in Melee and explore them a bit more to make them not only more competitive, but accessible and fun as well. series, specifically the competitive fan favorite, Melee. Rivals of Aether is a brand new competitive fighting game heavily inspired by the mechanics of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. This is a game I really feel needs more attention.
